Deborah Gearing worked as an actor and theatre director before becoming a playwright. After attending the Nuffield Theatre writers group her first play, Burn, was part of the National Theatre Connections programme in 2005; in 2006 the play was performed for a season in the Cottesloe Theatre, directed by Anna Mackmin. Burn was runner-up for the 2007 Brian Way Award for writing for young people.
Other plays include: Forest (2005) for Plymouth Theatre Royal, Rosalind: A Question of Life (2005), for Birmingham REP, and The Cage (2007) for the Nuffield Theatre, Southampton. She is currently working on a new play for the National Theatre.
Deborah leads workshops in schools and the community. She has a special interest in young people and arts for mental health. She also works as a translator and maintains close ties with Berlin, which she visits, accompanied by her two children, as frequently as she can.
