Roger Garfitt
Roger Garfitt
Fellow at Swansea University, 2003-08

Roger Garfitt lives in the Shropshire Hills, in an English parish with a Welsh name, and Border Songs, his sequence of poems on the history of the Marches, is engraved on glass screens in the County Records & Research Centre, Shrewsbury.

A lyric poet committed to reaching a wider audience, he performs Poetry & Jazz with Nikki Iles and the John Williams Septet, and Poetry & Dulcimer Music with Sue Harris on the hammered dulcimer. His Selected Poems are published by Carcanet.

His prose writing ranges from major reviews of Ted Hughes and Peter Redgrove for the TLS and London Review of Books to a vivid impression of the Drug War in Colombia and a journal of his return to the North East of England, to landscapes he shared with his late wife, the poet Frances Horovitz, whose Collected Poems he edited for Bloodaxe. He is currently working on The Horseman's Word, an account of the youthful misadventures by which he fell into poetry. The book will be published by Secker and extracts have appeared in Granta and Pretext.
