Max Adams
Fellow at University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2010-13

Max Adams was born in London in 1961. In a varied career as an archaeologist, woodsman and broadcaster he has explored themes of landscape, knowledge and humans' connectedness with the earth. His first major work, Admiral Collingwood: Nelson's Own Hero, was published by Weidenfeld & Nicholson in 2005. His group biography of the maverick artist John Martin's circle The Prometheans was published in 2009/10 by Quercus and was a Guardian Book of the Week. He has published many articles in both popular magazines and academic journals and written and presented a number of documentaries. He has just completed a third novel, The Ambulist, for which he is seeking representation. He teaches history and creative writing at the North-East Centre for Lifelong Learning and also works with school children on projects ranging from film-making and poetry to forestry and outdoor learning. He has lived and worked in North-East England since 1993 when he took up a post as Director of Archaeological Services at Durham University. While there he taught and tutored at undergraduate and post-graduate level. In 2003 Max was awarded a Churchill Fellowship and in 2005 he won an Elizabeth Longford grant.
