How do I avoid sexist words?

"There is still a lot of use of the generic ‘he’. Whenever I see ‘he’ I have a picture of a man in a grey suit. I take out ‘he’, unless it refers to a specific male person."

"The Handbook of Nonsexist Writing was first published about 1980 or 1981, so there is no real excuse for people not being aware of techniques for avoiding sexist writing. The he/she form is very cumbersome, but using plurals (especially they) or rephrasing a sentence can often overcome sexism."
