These writers and those like them who leave the comfort of their writing sheds in order to shine a light on some of the world's darkest, most neglected or dangerous corners, inspire me to bring these worlds to young readers.
At such times I imagine The Rolling Stones worrying about disturbing the neighbours or Jackson Pollock fretting about spilling paint on his studio floor.
As a late starter, approaching sixty, every book I produce has to count. So first I pick an issue I feel compelled to write about. I then look for a central idea around which to construct a plot.
