Back-to-Work Grants
These short-term grants are for writers who have experienced a temporary setback and need support covering day-to-day living costs. Our goal is to help you get back into a stable, sustainable working life.
Back-to-Work Grants are usually offered as an outright award to cover up to six months of essential expenses.
This grant may be for you if you have experienced any of the following:
- You are returning to writing after a break caused by ill health or caring responsibilities.
- You have experienced a sudden loss of work beyond your control – for example, redundancy, cancelled commissions or project delays.
- You have recently had an unexpected one-off cost which you are unable to cover.
Additional Criteria
Our grants are means tested. As part of the assessment, we consider your overall household financial position. Please note:
- Household savings and assets (excluding your primary residence) must not exceed £25,000
- You will be asked to provide supporting documentation in support of your application.
The RLF is NOT able to provide grants for the following:
- Creative practice (i.e., works in progress or publication costs)
- General fundraising appeals or letters requesting donations
- Academic research, scholarships, bursaries, student or private education fees, courses, or retreats
Before your application is considered, your work will also be assessed against our Literary Merit criteria. Literary Merit, once passed, is held in perpetuity, however you may be required to demonstrate continuation of practice as a writer to access ongoing support.
