Grants Programme

Literary Contribution Grants

These grants provide long-term, sustained support for writers who have made a significant literary contribution and are unable to cover the basic living costs through work, pensions or benefits.

This grant may be for you if you:

  • Are nearing or have reached retirement, or are unable to work due to a disability or long-term medical condition.
  • Have a minimum of five full-length works professionally published or produced in the UK or Ireland that meet the criteria under Eligibility by Format; the committee will at their discretion accept fewer works if there is clear demonstration of a professional literary practice of over 10 years.

Additional Criteria

Our grants are means tested. As part of the assessment, we consider your overall household financial position. Please note:

  • You will be asked to provide supporting documentation, including medical letters confirming a diagnosis or health condition.
  • Household savings and assets must not exceed £75,000. Equity held in your primary residence may be considered as an asset.

Before your application is considered, your work will also be assessed against our Literary Merit criteria. Literary Merit, once passed, is held in perpetuity, however you may be required to demonstrate continuation of practice as a writer to access ongoing support.
