Stephanie Norgate is a playwright and poet. Her first play, The Greatest Gift, broadcast on BBC R4, won a Radio Times drama award. Other radio plays include a Woman’s Hour series dramatising the adventures of an undercover female journalist in the nineteenth century.
Stephanie has always written poetry, which is her first love. Her poetry collections are: Hidden River (Bloodaxe, 2008, shortlisted for the Forward and Jerwood Aldeburgh first collection prizes) and The Blue Den (Bloodaxe, 2012). Her poems have appeared in publications such as Oxford Poets 2000, Best British Poetry (Salt, 2012), Magma, Modern Poetry in Translation, MsLexia, the London Magazine and Poetry London. She has received an Arts Council writer’s award. She currently writes poetry and fiction.
She taught creative writing at the University of Chichester where she also ran the MA in Creative Writing for many years. She has taught BA, MA and PhD students. Her critical work includes editing and contributing to Poetry and Voice (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2012), editing the Chalk Poets anthology (Sarsen, 2016), reviewing and writing a study of poetry trails in the landscape commissioned by Winchester Poetry Festival and South Downs National Park Authority.
As a freelance writing tutor, Stephanie enjoys running on-location poetry workshops and residencies, especially outdoors. She has been a poet in residence at the Barbican’s Fann Street wildlife garden and at the Otter Gallery, Chichester. She has given numerous poetry readings throughout the country. She lives in Sussex with her husband, a dramatist and lecturer, and has two adult children.
