About
Andrew Miller is the author of eight novels, from Ingenious Pain in 1997 to Now We Shall Be Entirely Free in 2018. He has received the International IMPAC prize, the James Tait Black Memorial prize, the Grinzane Cavour, the Costa Best Novel and the Costa Book of the Year award. His third novel, Oxygen, was shortlisted for the Booker prize.
He was educated at Middlesex Polytechnic, the University of East Anglia (where his tutors were Malcolm Bradbury, Rose Tremain and Lorna Sage), and Lancaster University where he completed a PhD in Creative Writing in 1997 under the supervision of David Craig.
He has worked as a residential social worker and spent a number of years teaching TEFL in Spain and Japan. He has taught Creative Writing at Bath Spa University, at the Faber Academy, the Arvon Foundation and the Guardian. He has a black belt in the Japanese martial art of aikido, is a keen sailor, and plays the mandolin in a folk band. He lives in South Somerset with his daughter, Frieda.
He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2012.
