Bridget Deane

Bridget Deane is a working-class, disabled writer based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne whose work spans television, film, theatre and radio. Her writing blends sharp humour with socially rooted drama, often exploring overlooked lives, identity and complex characters, creating stories that are both entertaining and socially observant.

Her award-winning short film The Ball screened internationally, winning the Golden Plaque at the Children’s International Film Festival India, Best Film at Short Kicks Berlin, and the Special Jury prize at the Lady Filmmakers Festival in Los Angeles; it was longlisted for a BAFTA. Her stage play Skin, a comic fantasy about ageing and intimacy, was shortlisted for the Soho Theatre New Writing award, while her comedy series Cinderellas was shortlisted for the Funny Women Writers’ Comedy Writing award. Bridget has also written for television, including Emmerdale, with projects optioned by numerous production companies.

Her current work in development reflects the breadth of her storytelling, from the feminist gangster drama Going Ugly (New Writing North/Channel 4), to the detective series The Estuary (Film Nation), and The Hospital, a period medical drama for ITV Studios. She is currently writing for ITV’s returning detective series The Bay (Tall Story Pictures).

Before focusing on writing, Bridget spent twelve years as a BAFTA-winning documentary producer/director, making primetime documentaries across the UK and the USA.

Currently, she also works as a freelance University Associate Lecturer, a script reader for The British Film Institute, and is a trustee for The Young Women’s Film Academy, whilst also making award-winning marmalade.
