Caroline Eden is an author, journalist and book critic who for the past fifteen years has specialised in writing about the post-Soviet world and its neighbouring countries. During that time she has had several books published including: Samarkand (Kyle Books, 2016), Black Sea (Quadrille, 2018), Red Sands (Quadrille, 2020) and Green Mountains (Quadrille, 2025). Her memoir, Cold Kitchen: A Year of Culinary Journeys (Bloomsbury, 2024), triangulates journalism, literary writing, and culinary reportage, a particular style of writing that she has become known for.
After establishing herself as a writer, occasional broadcaster (for BBC Radio 4’s From Our Own Correspondent) and cultural commentator, she has also been asked to write introductions for books by other authors, such as Through Khiva to Golden Samarkand by Ella Christie (John Murray, 2022) and They Went to Portugal: A Travellers’ Portrait by Rose Macaulay (Daunt Books, 2023). Whether it is full-length books, introductions, radio scripts or reviews, Caroline’s love of writing and books stems from her time working as a London bookseller more than twenty years ago, first for Ottakar’s and then for Waterstones. Writing convincing ‘staff recommendations’ at a bookshop is not unlike writing a book review for publication, whilst meeting sales reps from publishers, as well as helping to organise talks and events, provided Caroline with a useful introduction to the vast publishing world.
When not researching and travelling overseas, Caroline lives in the beautiful literary city of Edinburgh, where she enjoys running and walking in the nearby parks and valleys.
