About
Chris Vick is an acclaimed author of books for young people. His novels explore themes of nature, survival and adventure. Girl. Boy. Sea (Bloomsbury, 2019), a tale of survival on the high seas, was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal for Writing. Inspired by his work in conservation, his dystopian novel The Last Whale (Bloomsbury, 2021) focused on the fate of the great whales and the impacts of global warming and AI. Shadow Creatures (Bloomsbury, 2023) – a tale of occupation and resistance in Norway in WW2, based on his family’s history – won the Historical Association’s Young Quills Historical Fiction competition. Chris Vick’s books have been included in ‘best of year’ lists by the Daily Mail, the Big Issue and the Spectator.
Alongside his fiction writing Chris Vick has worked in communication for the global non-profit organisation, Whale and Dolphin Conservation, creating reports, website pages and more. He has written about nature, conservation and the importance of stories for young people, in the Guardian, Surf magazine, BBC Wildlife, and the Bustle, and spoken at Hay and many other literary festivals on these subjects. He frequently works with schools and universities, delivering talks and workshops on the structure and benefits of story and narrative.
Chris has two Masters degrees: an MA in Writing for Young People from Bath Spa University and an MSc in Responsibility and Business Practice from the University of Bath. He lives near Bath, but he and his family spend a lot of time in Cornwall, where he writes and surfs.
