Cole Moreton is a writer and broadcaster exploring who we are and what we believe in. His debut Hungry for Home (Viking 2000) was an investigation into Irish exile and belonging that was shortlisted for the John Llewellyn Rhys prize for a first book in any genre. Other narrative nonfiction titles include The Boy Who Gave His Heart Away (Harper Collins, 2017), the true story of a life-saving modern medical miracle. Cole wrote andvpresented a BBC Radio 4 series of the same name, which won Best Writing at the New York Festivals World’s Best Radio awards and Gold for Audio Moment of the Year at the Audio and Radio Industry awards.
Cole was executive editor of the Independent on Sunday and has written for the Guardian, the Telegraph and the Financial Times, among others. He was named Interviewer of the Year at the Press awards and has been shortlisted seven times across categories. Cole’s most recent book Everything is Extraordinary (Hodder & Stoughton, 2023) reflects on some of his more memorable encounters. He works as a coach and has taught writing for universities and various organisations including the Arvon Foundation.
Cole lives on the South Coast but grew up in the East End of London, where it felt impossible for a working-class kid to become a writer until an encouraging teacher suggested the way. He hopes to bring a similarly supportive spirit to his work as a Fellow of the RLF, helping each student to develop their writing skills and say what they need to say.
