Emylia Hall

Novelist

About

Emylia Hall is the author of four novels. Her debut, The Book of Summers, a coming-of-age story inspired by childhood holidays, was published in 2012. It was translated into eight languages, and was a Richard and Judy book club selection, going on to be voted the favourite read of the summer by readers. A Heart Bent Out of Shape was published in 2013, with The Sea Between Us following in 2015 and The Thousand Lights Hotel in 2017. With books set in rural Hungary, the Swiss Riviera, Cornwall’s far west and the Tuscan isle of Elba, her work is strongly influenced by place, and driven by an interest in how travel and landscape can help shape personal identity.

Emylia’s writing and short fiction has appeared in a variety of publications, including Elle magazine, the Book Slam anthology Too Much Too Young, and broadcast on BBC Radio 6 Music. Emylia has taught creative writing workshops in Kigali, Zurich, and at the University of Lausanne. She is a regular tutor for Arvon, a volunteer mentor for the Womentoring Project, and believes passionately in writing as a way of enriching life experience.

After studying at York University and in Lausanne, Switzerland, Emylia spent five years working in a London advertising agency before moving to the Alps. It was in the French ski town of Morzine that she began work on her first novel. She now lives in Bristol with her writer husband and young son.
