About

Kate Harrison is a bestselling author of 23 novels and nonfiction books, writing under her own name and the pen names Kate Helm and Eva Carter. Her work – driven by curiosity rather than genre rules – has been translated into 25 languages and spans psychological thrillers, book club fiction, young adult and the 5:2 Diet Book series.

Her first novel, Old School Ties (Piatkus, 2003), was selected for the WH Smith Fresh Talent award. Recent titles include the Eva Carter novels How to Save a Life (Mantle, 2021) and Owner of a Lonely Heart (Mantle, 2022), and the Kate Helm thrillers The Secrets You Hide (Bonnier, 2018) and The House Share (Bonnier, 2020). Kate also writes scripts for history and true-crime podcasts, covering subjects as diverse as Marilyn Monroe, the Bayeux tapestry and the 1980s pirate video heists.

A first-generation university graduate, Kate studied with the Open University while working as a BBC journalist on programmes including Panorama and Newsround. She wrote the drama script for the BBC One docudrama Angel of Death, and later led a team developing original programme concepts. She used this knowledge to publish Pitch Power, an author’s guide to pitching ideas. She has taught and mentored writers at the Open University, Kingston University, Jericho Writers and Goldsboro Academy.

After a cancer diagnosis, Kate created My Big Cancer Plot Twist on Substack, demystifying the ultimately successful fourteen-month treatment process. Kate lives in Brighton with her partner, their retired therapy dog, and a cat who rules the roost.
