Lucinda Hawksley is the author of three biographies of nineteenth century female artists: the Pre-Raphaelite model and painter Lizzie Siddal, the portrait painter Kate Perugini (née Dickens) and the sculptor Princess Louise. Her writing subjects embrace art history, literature, travel and social history and her other books include Charles Dickens: a bicentenary celebration, March, Women, March: voices of the women’s movement and 50 British Artists You Should Know. She is currently working on two miscellanies, about London and Victoriana, and a book on the social history of wallpaper. She is also editing a book of literary travel writing. Lucinda began her career as a book editor and moved into writing and editing for magazines and online media, during which time she won the Ed Lacy travel writing award. She lectures part time in art history and literature and runs writing workshops for schools, libraries and universities. She has been invited to give guest lectures at a number of universities including Washington & Lee (Virginia), Southwestern (Texas), Santa Fe College (Florida), the University of Genoa and the University of Calcutta. Lucinda is a regular lecturer and guide at the National Portrait Gallery in London, for whom she has also written two books: Moustaches, Whiskers & Beards (a history of some of the most outlandish facial hair in the collection) and the upcoming Charles Dickens and his Circle. She is a patron of both the Charles Dickens Museum in London and the Norwegian Pickwick Club, as well as a volunteer speaker for the Whales and Dolphins Conservation Society.
