Rahul Bery

Rahul Bery is a literary translator, working from Spanish and Portuguese into English. His first full-length translation, Rolling Fields, by the Spanish writer and filmmaker David Trueba, was published in 2020 by W&N. In 2022, it was shortlisted for the Translators Association First Translation prize. Since then, he has translated novels by Afonso Cruz, Simone Campos, Vicente Luis Mora and a work of literary nonfiction, What is Mine, by the Brazilian sociologist Jose Henrique Bortoluci, published by Fitzcarraldo Editions. 

He has co-translated books with Tim Gutteridge and Daniel Hahn, and his translations have appeared in Granta, the Stinging Fly, the TLS, Words Without Borders, The White Review and elsewhere. Recently, his focus has been on translating literary takes on genre fiction, such as Michel Nieva’s Dengue Boy, a science fiction novel set in Argentina which takes a tongue-in-cheek look at climate breakdown in the 25th century, and The Good Nazi by Samir Machado de Machado, a radical, queer spin on Agatha Christie-style locked-room mysteries. 

A qualified teacher, Rahul also works for the Stephen Spender Trust and the Queen’s College Oxford Translation Exchange, delivering creative-translation workshops in schools as well as to university students at Queen’s College and the University of East Anglia. From 2018–2019 he was the translator in residence at the British Library, where he also made education a fundamental part of his programme, as well as public events such as round tables and translation slams.
