About
Robert Alan Evans is a playwright, director and deviser whose work moves between theatre for adults and young people, dance, large-scale adaptation and musical theatre. His stories are often concerned with forgiveness, love and the recovery of our sacred human connection to myth, the unconscious, and the irrational.
His plays for the Royal Court Theatre include A Girl in a Car with a Man, in which Andrew Scott gave an Olivier Award-winning performance, and The Woods, which starred Lesley Sharp and Tom Mothersdale. He has been commissioned to write large-scale adaptations for major UK stages, and is developing an original musical exploring a queer history of London.
His extensive work for young audiences has earned a Critics’ Award for Theatre in Scotland for The Voice Thief, a TMA award for Pobby and Dingan and the Prix d’Orpheon for Simon la Gadouille in France. Dance collaborations with Barrowland Ballet and Scottish Ballet, including Tiger, Tiger Tale, Little Red and Too Close to the Sun, have toured internationally. He has also worked as a dramaturg with Scottish Dance Theatre. His work is published by Faber and Faber.
Evans’ work celebrates the liveness, uncertainty, communality and joy of theatre — qualities increasingly in need of defence from forces peddling a frictionless, digitally anaesthetised future.
Rob grew up outside Cardiff and has lived and worked in Edinburgh and Glasgow before moving to London.
