Sita Brahmachari

Sita Brahmachari is an award-winning writer of numerous intergenerational, rites-of-passage novels, short stories and plays. Her debut novel Artichoke Hearts (Macmillan, 2011) won the Waterstones Children’s book prize and was recognised by The Guardian as one of the top 50 diverse books since the 1950s. In Sita’s work young people look through a global window to face the great fissures in today’s world. In 2013 Sita co-created an acclaimed theatre production inspired by Shaun Tan’s graphic novel The Arrival (Tamasha, 2013). Her novels Where the River Runs Gold (Orion, 2019) and When Secrets Set Sail (Orion, 2021) were Waterstones’ and Blackwell’s books of the month. In 2018 Sita’s novel Tender Earth was honoured by the International Board on Books for Young People. In 2021 she was chosen as a World Book Day author.

Sita’s published study on interculturalism (MA, Central School of Speech and Drama, 1999) has influenced all her work. She has contributed essays to many new writing anthologies.

Sita is an Associate Lecturer on the Children’s Literature MA at Goldsmiths University. Articles and interviews, about her work with refugee and disenfranchised communities, have featured widely in the media. From her first role at the Royal Court Theatre (1988) Sita has been dramaturg and mentor to many writers. She lives in London with her husband. They have three grown-up children. For her next novel Sita has been exploring the devastating impacts of increased social inequality.
