Novelist, Short-story writer
About
Tony White is an acclaimed novelist and short-story writer. His novels include Foxy-T (Faber, 2003), and The Fountain in the Forest (Faber, 2018), the first in a trilogy using the detective genre to explore the legacy of social and political transformations in the aftermath of the UK Miners’ Strike of 1984–85. Tony White has held residencies at the Science Museum, which published his novel Shackleton’s Man Goes South (Science Museum, 2013) as its Atmosphere commission 2013; the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies; and King’s College, London. White’s nonfiction Another Fool in the Balkans: in the footsteps of Rebecca West (Cadogan, 2006) reflected upon West’s travelogue Black Lamb and Grey Falcon (Macmillan, 1941), exploring its contemporary relevance after the break-up of the former Yugoslavia.
Since 2008, Tony has taught creative writing at Brunel University London, and Birkbeck, University of London. His short story ‘Plain Speaking’ appears in Best British Short Stories 2022 (Salt Publishing, 2022). A former literary editor of the Idler magazine, he has reviewed for the Guardian and the Irish Times. He collaborated with artists Blast Theory on Ivy4evr (Channel 4, 2010) an interactive drama for mobile phones. In 1994 he founded Piece of Paper Press to publish artists’ books by leading writers and artists.
Tony White worked for Arts Council England (the national development agency for creativity and culture) from 1999–2007, and from 2010–2018 chaired the board of London arts radio station Resonance FM. He is currently working on his next novel.
