Steve Voake

Writer for young adults

Steve Voake is the award-winning author of several young adult novels including The Dreamwalker’s Child, The Starlight Conspiracy and Blood Hunters (Faber & Faber). He has also written the Daisy Dawson and Hooey Higgins series for younger readers and Insect Detective, a non-fiction picture book. In 2005 he contributed a short story to the anthology Higher Groundin aid of the survivors of the 2004 tsunami disaster. His books have been translated into many different languages. The Web of Fire was one of the books recommended by the Education Secretary in 2007 to encourage teenage boys to read. Blood Hunters won Southampton’s Favourite Book award and was selected as one of the titles on the national Booked Up scheme. Fightback won the Bolton book award in 2011. Steve is currently writing a new series for Walker Books. He is senior lecturer in creative writing at Bath Spa University and a regular tutor for the Arvon Foundation. In addition to his work at university, Steve regularly teaches writing workshops to groups of gifted and talented children as well as providing author talks and creative writing workshops in schools across the country. He has taught a writing masterclass for the Guardian and has given talks on his work at various events including the Edinburgh International book festival, Cheltenham Literary festival, Bath Literary festival and Aberdeen Storytelling festival.

Before writing his first novel, Steve was Headteacher of Kilmersdon Primary School in Somerset. He lives with his family in Somerset.

Steve has taught a Masterclass for The Guardian and tutored many successful authors including Emma Carroll, Jasbinder Bilan and Lesley Parr. He is a regular tutor for the Arvon Foundation.
