New term, new tips – five ways to access our RLF student resources
- 25 September, 2024
We’re well into September now, and for most students this month means only one thing: the start of a new academic year.
With new people to meet, new stationery to purchase and, at some point, new assignments to do, this is a great time to take stock and prepare for the term ahead – and making sure your writing skills are the best they can be is a great way to do that.
So, as universities and colleges across the UK welcome students back, we’ve put together a selection of resources to help you make sure your written communications are top class.
1. If you want some quick tips from our writers, read this
Keep your essay title and your analysis of it in mind as you write – are you still answering the question or have you gone off-topic? Be honest!
RLF Consultant Fellow Katie Grant
Our Consultant Fellows are successful published writers with at least two years experience tutoring university students and facilitating group writing sessions.
You’ll find a whole series of writing suggestions from our Consultant Fellows over on their blog, and in our recent article we whittled it down to seven particularly top tips.

2. If you want to hear from previous students, watch this
So you’ve read all these writerly tips, but how do you put them into practise? In this video round-up, some of our RLF Fellows’ previous students share their own suggestions.
3. If you want to take a deeper dive, Ask The Elephant
From managing your assignments to planning essays to writing introductions, arguments, paragraphs and conclusions, our Ask The Elephant website includes even more suggestions from our writers, broken down into easy-to-digest numbered guides and tips.

4. If you want one-to-one writing support, find a Fellow
All of the tips here are based on the work of past and present RLF Fellows. As the new academic year begins, we have a number of new and continuing RLF Fellows joining universities and academic institutions across the UK. Any student from any course can book an appointment with an RLF Fellow to discuss all sorts of aspects of writing, from structuring arguments to making essays clearer. Every session with an RLF Fellow is free, confidential and independent of the university.
Find out if your institution has an RLF Fellow and contact them directly to book an appointment.
5. If you want to know what it’s like to work with an RLF Fellow, watch this
Ibrahim worked with one of our RLF Fellows on planning essays, which in turn helped him be more defined with his research.
