Cath Senker

An award-winning non-fiction writer and editor, Cath is also a university and ESOL teacher.

Originally a project manager and editor of children’s educational books, Cath became a freelance author in 1990 and has written around 170 children’s non-fiction titles, specialising in history, world religions, and global, social and environmental issues.

In December 2018, Far From Home, Refugees and Migrants Fleeing War, Persecution and Poverty won the 2018 Educational Writers’ Award. The judges commended the book for ‘highlighting individual experiences and presenting different viewpoints in an impeccably non-judgmental way.’

Cath now also writes for adults. Her first title was Cybercrime and the Darknet (Arcturus, 2016). In 2017, she self-published Stranded in the Six-Day War, the extraordinary but little-known story of 14 merchant ships trapped in the Suez Canal at the start of the Six-Day War in June 1967.

Teaching is an important element of Cath’s work. A qualified and experienced ESOL teacher, she has taught English abroad and currently teaches English to migrants and refugees in the UK.

Since 2013, Cath has run regular writing-skills workshops at the University of Sussex for undergraduates and postgraduates, also offering workshops tailored to specific disciplines. Currently, she is an Academic Advisor at the University of Sussex Business School. In 2020, she achieved a PG Cert HE and qualified as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
