David Stuart Davies

David Stuart Davies taught English for 20 years before leaving the classroom to become editor of Sherlock, the crime-fiction magazine. He has written six Sherlock Holmes novels, the latest entitled Sherlock Holmes and the Devil’s Promise. In Starring Sherlock Holmes David details the film career of the famous sleuth. Bending the Willow: Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes is regarded as the definitive work on the subject. Six novels feature his own detective hero Johnny Hawke, a private detective operating in London during the Second World War. A new series of detective thrillers set in 1980s Yorkshire involving DI Paul Snow includes Brothers in Blood (2013) and Innocent Blood (January 2015).

David is a committee member of the Crime Writers’ Association and edits their monthly magazine Red Herrings. His two successful one-man plays, Sherlock Holmes: the last act and Sherlock Holmes: the life and death, starring Roger Llewellyn, which premiered at Salisbury Playhouse and the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guilford respectively, are currently touring the UK. Both dramas have been recorded on audio CD by The Big Finish.

David is the general contributing editor for Wordsworth Editions’ Mystery & Supernatural series. His interest in supernatural fiction prompted him to write a collection of strange tales The Halloween Mask (2014). David has given talks and dramatic presentations at various festivals, libraries, and conferences and has been a guest speaker on the Queen Mary II.
