Gary Mitchell is a writer and director for television, film, radio and theatre. In 1990, he won a BBC Radio 4 ‘Young Playwrights Festival’ award for The World, The Flesh and The Devil and, in 1995, he won the Stewart Parker Award for radio. In a Little World of Our Own won the 1998 Irish Times Theatre Award for ‘best new play’. In the same year, Gary won the Belfast Drama Award for In a Little World of Our Own and Sinking, and was made writer-in-residence at the Royal National Theatre, London. He went on to win the Pearson ‘Best New Play’ prize for Trust, and – for The Force of Change – both the George Devine Award and the Evening Standard Charles Wintour Award for ‘most promising playwright’. Suffering, a film written and directed by Gary, was chosen as the best short film at the Belfast Film Festival in 2003. His script, ‘As The Beast Sleeps’, won a Belfast Arts Award for TV and was placed 3rd at the 2002 Prix Europa European TV Awards in Berlin. In 2006, Remnants of Fear won the Aisling Award for Art and Culture. Gary lives in Belfast with his wife Alison, two children, stepsons and cats.
