Gillian Richmond is a television, stage and radio dramatist who grew up on army bases around the world. The Last Waltz, her first major play and winner of a Thames TV theatre writers’ award, told the story of a friendship between two ill-matched army wives. Other stage plays include In the Groove, Ellen and The Legacy (which was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award). She was writer-in-residence at the Soho Theatre and has had a long association with the Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich, which commissioned and premiered Sitting Duck and Within the Fortress.

Early in her career Gillian was a core writer on the BBC Radio 4 soap, The Archers. Three plays have been broadcast on BBC Radio 4: The Snatch, Moving Along and The Lost Child. Gillian has written in excess of 80 hours of primetime television. Her credits include EastEnders, Silent Witness, Casualty, Heartbeat, Maisie Raine, Eldorado and Holby City. She continues to contribute to various popular TV drama series while also developing original projects for television and stage.

In the past Gillian has devised and written plays and musicals with primary-school children. She regularly runs scriptwriting masterclasses and workshops, and mentors emerging writers. She has given talks at the BBC and the British Film Institute and has recently worked at, among other places, the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and Freedom from Torture. Gillian Richmond is married with two grown-up children and one small dog and lives in London.
