Novelist, Radio/tv/screenwriter
About
Kitty Fitzgerald is a fiction writer who has also written theatre, radio drama, film and poetry. Much of her work features outsiders: characters on the edges of society, often dealing with rejection.
Her novel, Pigtopia (Faber & Faber, 2005), took second place in the Barnes & Noble Discover awards in 2006 and sold to over 20 countries. It is currently under option for theatre. Her first novel, Marge (Sheba, 1987) was re-published in 2015 with a new title, Identity (Room to Write). Small Acts of Treachery (Brandon, 2001), is currently under option for film.
She has worked as an editor for IRON Press for many years and for them has edited three anthologies of short fiction: most recently, Root (2013), short stories that reaffirm the North East as a vibrant region for new writing. IRON Press published Miranda’s Shadow, her first short story collection, in 2014.
Before becoming a writer she was a wax trimmer, the last butter maid in Devon and head of an art department in a special priority school. For many years she was a member of Newcastle Upon Tyne’s Amber film and photography collective and worked as scriptwriter on the feature film Dream On, which won numerous international awards, including Most Original Screenplay at Le Baule film festival. She has reviewed television, theatre, books, and worked as an Arts Council literature adviser for several years. She lives in a fishing village on the North East coast.
