About
Lisa Ganobcsik-Williams teaches and researches academic writing. One of her main interests is the historiography of academic writing, which is the subject of her edited book Teaching Academic Writing in UK Higher Education (Palgrave Macmillan, 2006) and of Writing Programs Worldwide (WAC Clearinghouse/Parlor Press, 2012), a book she co-edited. Lisa has also pursued an interest in transnational perspectives on academic writing pedagogy and scholarship, through conference presentations, publications and executive board membership of the European Association for the Teaching of Academic Writing (EATAW), the European Writing Centers Association (EWCA) and International Writing Centers Association (IWCA).
Before moving to the UK, Lisa taught composition and tutored in university writing centres in the USA. In 1999 the RLF awarded her a post-doctoral research fellowship, whose main project A Report on the Teaching of Academic Writing in UK Higher Education (RLF, 2004) surveyed staff perspectives on the teaching of writing in higher education and mapped university academic-writing programmes and initiatives. In 2001 a grant from the RLF enabled Lisa and University of Warwick writing programme colleagues to host a seminal conference, Teaching Writing in Higher Education. Since 2004, Lisa has been head of the Centre for Academic Writing at Coventry University.
Lisa helped to establish EATAW’s Journal of Academic Writing in 2011. New projects include developing a book series on teaching academic writing in the disciplines, and working with the RLF to create an online Academic Writing Provision Register for professionals who teach and support academic writing in universities in the UK.
