Suzannah Dunn

Suzannah Dunn has published eleven novels and two collections of short fiction. Her books include: Quite Contrary (Flamingo,1992), which won a Betty Trask award and was described by the Scotsman as ‘a luminous, honest and haunting portrait of a single woman doing a demanding job and trying to stay alive inside’; Commencing Our Descent (Flamingo, 1999), which was shortlisted for the Romantic Novelists’ Association book of the year; The Confession of Katherine Howard (HarperPress, 2011), which was a Richard and Judy pick; and most recently The Lady of Misrule (Little, Brown, 2015), which the Telegraph described as ‘poignant and beautifully written’. Her books are translated into several languages and published in America.

Her stories have been anthologised (for example, in Malcolm Bradbury’s review of twentieth century British and American comic fiction, Present Laughter) and broadcast on BBC Radio 4.

She is an experienced workshop leader, having tutored annually for two decades for the Arvon Foundation, and a frequent speaker at festivals and conferences. She has been writer in residence in a variety of settings, including BBC Southern Counties Radio for a year and Channel 4’s The Richard and Judy Show for six weeks.

She has an MA in creative writing from the University of East Anglia and was herself programme director of the MA in novel writing at the University of Manchester for six years but now teaches predominantly in the independent sector, for, among others, Curtis Brown Creative, the writing school run by the major literary agency.
