How do I ask someone to read my work?

“The great thing about writing papers, journal articles, is that you get feedback from somebody outside who isn’t your supervisor. Your supervisor is not as involved with your work as you are but they are still slightly too involved to give an independent perspective. Nobody else wants to read your work because it’s a PhD and nobody wants to read PhDs. It’s quite a task really to ask another academic to read a chapter of your work. It’s quite a lot to ask of somebody unless it’s just for proofreading purposes, so certainly getting the feedback from the people who reviewed my work was really valuable for writing the final PhD.”

“It would help writers if they read their material aloud. Then they would find an awkward structure would be revealed. It would sound odd or the sentence would go on too long.”
