What do I do with tables and figures?

“There are some simple rules for tables and figures. The key one is to number tables and figures separately as they appear in the text. Some people leave the numbering till the end and leave Table xx in the text until the final version, because otherwise inserting or deleting a table could screw up the whole numbering. Make sure all the tables and figures have titles which can then be transferred to a contents page. I always think that tables are best as uprights rather than landscapes that force the reader to turn the page through ninety degrees. And obviously they have to have some reference in the text, preferably somewhere in the text near the table.”
